Here we are waiting during surgery. The nurse did a good job of keeping us informed.
Still, it was a long day.
This is what greeted us the first time we saw him.
He looked very peaceful considering what he had just been through.
What a tiny little guy in a big, scary bed.

I try to rub his little head when he starts to wake up so he'll know we're here. Of course, they usually give him a dose of morphine shortly after he wakes up because he's still hurting. So, off he goes to sleep again! They tell me that the chest tubes hurt as much as the incision, so he should be a lot more comfortable after those come out tomorrow.
Asher likes it when Dad rubs his eyes. He'd like to do it himself, but they have his hands restrained so he won't start pulling out wires and tubes. He is so limber that he nearly pulled the breathing tube out with his toes. No joke.
This whole heart surgery experience has been amazing. The doctor repaired the main hole (ventricular septal defect), but he also repaired two atrial septal defects (holes), closed an artery that should have closed at birth, and repaired his tricuspid valve that was leaking because of the VSD. We are so blessed to have had such wonderful cardiologists taking care of Asher. They have followed his development since he was a few weeks old and have basically given him a whole new heart this week. I can't wait to see how he feels after he has recovered. We may not be able to keep up with him!

Asher is such a blessing and a miracle. He is perfect.
Psalm 139: 13-18
13 You made my whole being;
you formed me in my mother's body.
14 I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way.
What you have done is wonderful.
I know this very well.
15 You saw my bones being formed
as I took shape in my mother's body.
When I was put together there,
16 you saw my body as it was formed.
All the days planned for me
were written in your book
before I was one day old.
17 God, your thoughts are precious to me.
They are so many!
18 If I could count them,
they would be more than all the grains of sand.
When I wake up, I am still with you.
